DPF Regeneration Check the current state of the diesel particulate filter in your car and request a regeneration if required. Only for cars with diesel engine and diesel particulate filter. BMW - Diesel particluate filter (DPF) regeneration. To enable regeneration of the partuculate filter, regeneration must be requested in the DDE control unit. The regeneration is requested in that the consumed fuel since the last regeneration is set to a maximum value in the DDE control unit.
For the benefit of others: 1) Clear faults for engine. 2) Change to EOL service mode. 3) Login with code 27971. 4) Basic Settings > Service DPF Regeneration (cant remember the exact wording) 5) Long press the green button (it will say it exited due to safety) 6) Turn off engine (ignition still on) 7) Turn on engine.
#1 · Apr 26, 2021 Hi, my 2007 X3 3.0d has recently started losing power and I presume it to be a dpf issue as the car has only done very short distances over the last 18 months. Is there a way of kick start the regeneration process without taking it to a bmw dealer? Is there a cheapish diagnostic unit which can fault find and initiate this? thanks
4. Check diesel particulate filter (visually check whether the exhaust tailpipe and diesel particulate filter outlet are covered with soot). 5. Perform regeneration. Only possible when driving at constant speed for at least 30 min. (In connection with this fault, regeneration cannot be initiated with the corresponding service function).
how does bmw dpf regeneration work
Regenerations within the DPF are necessary to “clean-out” as much of the engine particulates as possible. If regeneration does not occur periodically it could create problems with the engine. There are three types of regenerations that can occur: passive, active, and forced. Passive regeneration Insight looks at the automotive industry’s growing use of gasoline particulate filters as one method of compliance. Although figures vary widely, recent data suggests that every year air pollution causes more than 5.5 million people to die prematurely worldwide. The main culprit is reported to be the emission of small particles from power

The Diesel Particulate Filter needs to be heated to a very high temperature in order to burn off the particles of soot. This can be achieved in one of two ways: active regeneration or passive regeneration. Passive Regeneration. When you drive for a long time at high speeds, the exhaust reaches very high temperatures. Driving at 70mph or above

In simple terms, the DPF is a huge screen that traps the soot coming from the engine. This filter looks like a rocket shell underneath newer trucks. The DPF has temperature sensors and pressure tubes used by the PCM to help in determining when the DPF screen is full. When the DPF needs cleaning it undergoes what is called “regeneration.” Yes , also BMWs do a DPF regen cycle. The interval depends on a few factors like exhaust gas temperature and differential pressure behind the DPF. Time and distance has not the main reason as the shorter the trips are, the cooler the engine will be, resulting in low EGT and soot buildup in the DPF.

BMW states in DIS57 that the DPF regen requires; 10 litres of Diesel in tank Coolant temp to be over 75c Constant 40mph road speed Most DPF regen issues are caused by faulty coolant thermostats and constant short journeys, both resulting in engine temperatures not going over 75c, so the regen process does not happen resulting in a heavily clogged DPF.

Regeneration, or regen, of the DPF filter is the process that burns the soot accumulation that is inside the DPF filter. Educating yourself on what a forced regeneration is and how it works will help you understand your aftertreatment system better. Forced regeneration is performed when a diagnostic scan tool starts the regeneration process.
The car suffers from too-frequent DPF regeneration cycles, probably every 50 - 100 miles, at worst it was only 8 miles between regens. I can confirm that the regen cycles are being performed successfully (exhaust gas temp before DPF goes from 300C to 600C for 10min, then returns to 300C) and they are competing successfully (distance counter
Original VPECKER Easydiag is another DPF reset tool: There are available with VPECKER Easydiag wireless version and Bluetooth version, both are tested ok to do DPF Forced Regeneration easily on e.g BMW and VW etc, even CDP can’t even do that, even with DieselMax installed you couldn’t force a DPF regen on any VWs or BMWs.
